A new world record has been smashed by Belgian angler Chris Vanden Eycken last July.   What record I hear you ask?  Well Chris fished non-stop for 162 hours.  Let’s take a closer look at this astonishing achievement.

From the 18th to the 25th July last year Chris Vanden Eycken fished an exhausting 162 hours angling marathon on the magnificent 1.5 hectare lake at Viane Castle in Belgium.

He managed to stay awake for the whole time and was allowed a 15 minute break to wash and relax every 3 hours. He ate whilst fishing still holding his pole and never even used a spray bar!

A physiotherapist was on hand to massage him during the session and keep him exercising.  Chris wore legging supports to help blood circulate to his feet and he was checked every hour by officials just to make sure he was still awake!

During his 162 hour session Chris got through 45 kg of groundbait and 25kg of IM5 green pellets.  He caught 600 fish for just over 1,000 kilos comprising carp up to 8 kg and bream up to a couple of kilos.

We would like to congratulate our new world record holder – fishing for 162 hours without sleeping is quite an achievement!  You can read more about Chris’s exploits in this year’s Guinness Book of World Records
